When Life is Like Compost 🌱
- Galit "gah-leet" Stam
Can I offer you a strange thought?
What if we looked at life like compost?
Stay with me… 😅
Compost doesn't become rich soil despite the scraps, it becomes rich soil because of them.
We don't choose banana peels, coffee grounds, or eggshells over fresh flowers. In fact, we'd usually rather throw the scraps away. And yet, given time and the right conditions, those discarded, stinky scraps can become some of the most fertile soil for new life, because it transforms.
Healing can unfold much the same way. Some experiences smell terrible, feel chaotic, and leave us wondering why they happened at all. Yet they can unexpectedly become the very things that nourish growth, wisdom, compassion, resilience, and even abundance.
None of us wakes up hoping for heartbreak, illness, rejection, or disappointment. We'd much rather skip the messy parts. When things cause pain, it can be quite hard to think we’re in the right place at the right time, or to expect that it’ll work out in the end, or even that there is a lesson or silver lining to be had.
One thing that helps me when fear, pain, or dread arises is to reflect upon how most of my complicated, grueling hardships eventually revealed profound, life-altering gifts.
I'm not talking about mildly uncomfortable seasons or ordinary disappointments. I'm talking about experiences that brought me to my knees emotionally, mentally, relationally, and sometimes all three at once.
Examples:
The failed test that led to a completely different educational experience that led to meeting my person.
The relationship that started off so rocky, with deep ruptures in important family relationships, eventually grew into something with incredible strength, true partnership, and ultimate friendship.
The fall that broke my back, causing so much suffering that, out of desperation, I became open to discovering alternative remedies and therapies, which eventually led to incredible healing, rigorous, interdisciplinary education and, eventually, my profession as a transformation coach, healer, and educator.
Woh. 😅
These most challenging, painful experiences eventually led to some of my most treasured blessings. Not immediately, and certainly not without many (*many!*) tears, but over time it became so clear that they shaped me in the most wonderful ways.
And yet, not every story wraps up so neatly.
Sometimes, hardships just feel hard. There isn't a clear silver lining waiting around the corner. Sometimes the loss remains a hole.
The friend’s illness that wasn’t curable.
The abusive bosses who tore my self-esteem and confidence to shreds, leaving wounds that took years to repair.
The close, important friendship that ended so abruptly and unexpectedly.
I've been reflecting on what to do when the pain doesn't magically resolve, when the outcome just feels like heartbreak. I've realized that healing doesn't always mean the hole disappears. Sometimes it means we learn to grow something beautiful around it.
While I can't always change what happened, I can choose to look for what the experience taught me, how it shaped me, and the unexpected treasures and opportunities I received, even if I would never have chosen the experience itself.
I don't have to call an experience good to recognize that something positive grew from it. When I look closely, I can find beauty. For example:
Extra closeness and the kindest words towards the end of a life.
Friendships with colleagues that lasted decades.
The strongest push toward a career that was much more aligned with my path.
Experiences that opened me to extensive healing, upgraded skills, wisdom, and lessons I utilize in my life, with my family, and in every class and coaching session.
Deeper awareness of, and ability to support different forms of neurodiversity, trauma responses, and reactions.
Space for even deeper, more powerful friendships.
More practice letting go of other people’s opinions - both good and bad (and practice makes…better! 😆)
My recognition of possibility and limitlessness, and my ability to become a receiver of great abundance in every form.
While we can't always change the outcome, we can choose how we move forward.
Just like compost doesn't transform overnight, neither do we. Healing takes time, care, patience, and the courage to keep turning toward ourselves with compassion, even when the process feels arduous. Sometimes, what once seemed like the end of the story becomes the beginning of something awesome we never could have imagined.
We don't always know what the compost will become while we're still standing in the pile. But we do know that, eventually, compost can transform into lush soil capable of nourishing vibrant flowers, towering trees, and abundant harvests.
Healing is its own kind of alchemy.
We don't necessarily blossom when life is easy. We grow when we allow ourselves to feel and process our emotions, practice regulating our nervous systems, learn, explore, and find new and creative ways to move forward.
Then, what once seemed impossible can become the most beautiful new beginning.
