Phew! That was crazy!

  • Galit Stam

A beach walk turned into an ocean rescue—and a reminder that life often places us exactly where we’re meant to be.

(Dec 2025)

A few weeks ago, my family and I went for a little walk at the beach. A bit disappointed that we didn’t have time to surf, we still felt present and grateful to be by the ocean.

As my boys were exploring the tide pools (their second favorite beach activity), we heard a yelp and looked up just in time to see a woman slip on the wet rocks. She was screaming in pain with a badly injured leg, and we couldn’t easily lift or move her. The tide was quickly coming in and the sun was setting. She was in a really dangerous spot—vulnerable to the powerful ocean, in a bit of shock, shivering from the cold water, and frightened.

Somehow, as though aided by an unseen force, we managed to move her to a higher rock and got most of her body out of the water. Then we called for help. It took hours(!) for emergency crews —trucks, a boat, and eventually a helicopter — to determine the safest course of action. It was pitch black and fully high tide before she was finally airlifted to safety.

Phew!

We felt a deep sense of gratitude and purpose knowing we’d helped someone get through such a precarious situation. The woman was hurt, but she would live — because we decided to “just” take a walk on the beach. We were in the right place at the right time.  What a powerful reminder:

We are where we are meant to be.

Every time we slip and fall — physically or metaphorically — we can choose to see it as synchronicity

  • The universe (Divine life force) nudging us toward a better path

  • An opportunity for awakening

  • A reminder that challenges arrive for us, to allow us to see a better way

  • To become receptive to possibility

Our hope is that the woman, too, can find her silver lining, her lesson, and even some joy (beyond being doted on by 17 cute lifeguards, a wild helicopter ride, and a great story to tell her kids!).

Every experience is a teacher — even (especially?) the ones that shake us a little (or a lot). When you find yourself in the middle of chaos or surprise, take a deep breath, look around, and ask, What is life showing me right now?”

There’s always wisdom waiting in life's waves.

I invite you to take a few deep breaths 🌬️, let your shoulders drop, and reflect 🤔and/or journal ✍️on this:

What if everything that happens — even the hard stuff — is for you?
How would that shift your perspective today?
