We Were SO Lucky!

  • Galit Stam

A simple beach walk turned into a rescue—and a reminder that small acts of kindness, compassion, and even a smile can bring light to someone’s darkest moments.

(Dec 2025)

Hello there!

Recently, I shared a story about how my family went for a walk at the beach and witnessed a woman fall on rocks in a tide pool as the sun was setting.

We were the only ones within at least half a mile. Lying on her back in the rising tide, she might not have made it out had we not been there. We felt absolutely compelled to help and could have simply called 9-1-1, but we recognized we were in a position to do better.  After managing to move the woman so that her upper body was out of the water — a feat that defied our size and the slick terrain — we helped her take soothing breaths, massaged her shoulders, and eased a bit of her panic as we waited for the lifeguards.

It was an intense, humbling, and deeply meaningful event (one I hope never to repeat!). We were grateful to not just help ensure her safety, but to bring some calm to a chaotic moment.

That experience reminded me that while not every moment is so dramatic (phew!), we are always invited to share our light in small, powerful ways. One of my favorites is something so simple: a smile. Free, easy to share, and full of quiet power, a smile creates ripples of connection and joy to everyone we gift them to.

We can each be a spark that shines on ourselves and the lives of those around us, like a candle glowing so brightly in the dark.

We can choose kindness. We can choose to bring light.

And when we do, we are actually serving ourselves!
It feels so good to gift our joy to others.

When we feel grumpy or disconnected, I find that a great way to rediscover my joy is to serve. It starts by taking care of ourselves.  When we tend to our own nervous systems first, we’re able to offer kindness, presence, and light from a place of abundance rather than depletion. From joy rather than guilt. From love rather than pressure.

I invite you to take a deep breath 🌬️, then reflect 🤔and/or journal ✍️on this:

  • What is one way you can offer yourself some care and compassion today?

  • What is one little way you can serve others -– with joy — because you want to?

  • What might change if you truly recognized how your energy shapes the world?
